The College of Education is pleased to announce the upcoming lecture series by Green Honors Chair, Dr. Reta Ugena Whitlock. Join us Wednesday, Nov. 20 for her presentation, “Reconstructing the Contemporary South” and on Thursday, Nov. 21 for her presentation, “Queer South Rising”. Both lectures will begin at 5 p.m. in the Amon G. Carter Lecture Hall, Betsy and Steve Palko Building.

Dr. Whitlock is one of the groundbreaking reconceptualist theorists. She is a consummate story teller and her work on the South is both important and necessary for understanding the impact of this subculture on American life, including fundamentalist religion, the formative nature of place, intersectionality (class, race, gender and sexual orientation). Dr. Whitlock’s contributions include the demonstration that narrative research and humor are credible and methodologically important.

Dr. Whitlock is an associate professor of Curriculum & Instruction and Gender & Women's Studies at Kennesaw State University where she also serves as the associate chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies department. She is the author of This Corner of Canaan: Curriculum Studies of Place & the Reconstruction of the South (Peter Lang Publishing, 2007). Her most recent work, Queer South Rising: Voices of a Contested Place (Information Age Publishing, 2013) is a collection of essays that explore the multiple intersections of Southern place-religion, politics, sexuality, race and education that transcend regional boundaries.

Dr. Whitlock graduated from Athens State University with a B.A. in Secondary Education and holds a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Copping State College. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Louisiana State University with a specialization in curriculum theory. Her professional experience includes several years teaching in middle and high schools as well as working for the Louisiana Department of Education prior to joining Kennesaw State University.
