TCU’s Model United Nations team participated in the National Model United Nations conference in New York City from March 17-21. TCU’s delegations received the Outstanding Delegation award, the highest possible recognition from the conference.

Comprised of 33 students, TCU’s Model United Nations team members represented the United Kingdom and Georgia. The conference distributes awards by country; both of TCU’s representative countries were awarded the Outstanding Delegation award. Areas of evaluation for the award include remaining “in character,” participating in a committee and proper use of the rules and procedure. Outstanding Delegates are also decided by the votes of peer delegates in each committee.

“The students in the Model United Nation program did an excellent job representing TCU at the conference in New York,” said Eric Cox, director of TCU’s Model United Nations program. “The real benefit of a conference like this one is a combination of learning new perspectives about a range of issues and interacting with students from around the world. The award recognition is a result of the incredibly hard work our students put in over several months.”

According to Model United Nations’ website, “Model United Nations is a nonprofit organization that advances the understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues. More than 5,000 university delegates come to New York City each spring at the National Model United Nations conference to discuss current global issues on 20 selected committees.”

The Model United Nations program at TCU offers students the opportunity to simulate the workings of the United Nations as representatives of one of the member-states. Students research the policies of their designated country on a variety of topics. Participation in conferences helps students improve their negotiating, public speaking and writing skills. TCU attends the National Model United Nations conference in New York City each spring and TCU delegations consistently win awards for their participation in Model United Nations conferences.
