“The Emerging Role of Women in Sports Journalism”

TCU’s Schieffer School of Journalism will welcome six accomplished female sports journalists from ESPN on Feb. 26 for a symposium on “The Emerging Role of Women in Sports Journalism.”

The symposium will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Brown-Lupton University Union Ballroom. There will be a meet-and-greet session one hour prior to the event. TCU students, staff and faculty from across the campus are invited on a first-come, first-served basis. Invitations have been extended to other journalism programs in the region.

The ESPN journalists will also spend two days meeting with TCU’s journalism students and faculty, working with TCU Student Media and interacting with other areas of the university.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to explore how these high-profile journalists chose sports as their primary focus and to demonstrate to our students and others how they have made an impact,” said John Lumpkin, director of the Schieffer School. “This is very generous of ESPN in its support of journalism education.”

The panel will be moderated by Joslyn Dalton, digital media strategy project manager at ESPN and chief of staff to Rob King, ESPN’s senior vice president of digital and print media. Dalton, a former collegiate athlete, also served as associate manager during the launch of espnW, ESPN’s first business dedicated to female athletes and fans.

King visited the Schieffer School of Journalism in November 2012, leading to the collaboration on the Feb. 26 symposium. “The two days I spent in Fort Worth blew my mind,” King said. “The quality of the school's facilities was exceeded only by the quality of the young men and women using the facilities -- intelligent, dedicated journalists compiling work and training that would make them extremely valuable in the job market.”

Other panelists will include Jena Janovy, member of the ESPN editorial board; Jemele Hill, ESPN columnist and contributor; Michele Steele, ESPN anchor and reporter; Jane McManus, football writer for ESPN New York; and Lori Higginbotham, multimedia producer.
