Super spellers take stage at TCU College of Education Regional Spelling Bee

The nearly three-hour competition looked like it would go on a good while as 11 spellers remained after nine rounds, and none had been eliminated since Round 7, nailing words with origins from Afrikaans, Portuguese, Old Norse and Tapori. But then Rounds 10 and 11 knocked out seven spellers with toughies like “muishond,” “beetewk,” “maraschino,” “genteel,” “ewer,” “phosphorous” and “toreador.”

 

For only the second time and the first time as title sponsor, the College of Education hosted the contest, featuring 25 spellers from nine counties aged 9 to 14.
