Eleanor Weltge, a senior nursing major, received second place in Non-Fiction Prose in “The Creative Writing Reception and Awards Program,” held April 1 in the D.J. Kelly Center.

This contest, established in 1944, was open to all undergraduate students and sponsored by the “Thursday Group, TCU Women Exes.” Faculty in the Department of English judged the entries.

Weltge’s essay was titled “The Prostate Cancer Dilemma: A position statement on PSA Screening.” The essay was originally written for the Critical Inquiry into the Healthcare Delivery System (CI) course taught by Diane Hawley, associate professor of professional practice in Harris College. The essay assignment was to write a personal position paper on a controversial health-related issue.

Weltge decided to write about the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening, which is the current standard for screening men for prostate cancer. She explained the controversy stems from whether patients benefit from these screenings in catching cases of prostate cancer, or if it is “over-treatment.”

“I’m really glad that I submitted my paper to the contest. I put a lot of hard work into that paper, and it was such a great reward to see it pay off,” Weltge said.
