TCU's College of Nursing is pleased to host Lisa Day, consultant on the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s National Study of Nursing Education,
as its 2013 Cecil H. and Ida Green Honors Chair.

Day is one of the co-authors of the sensational publication Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, which reports the results from a study on professional formation. The study focused on the nursing profession and the areas in which education could be improved to better equip nursing students for their future profession.

The book calls for changes in how nurses are educated, taking into account the current nursing shortage and the belief that nurses will not be prepared for the profound changes in science, technology and the nature and settings of nursing practice. “Professional formation is at the heart of understanding the responsibilities for ethical, clinical reasoning under uncertain conditions in relation to the other’s safety and well-being. Learning to be a professional requires emersion in the experience under the guidance and coaching of a seasoned professional,” said Paulette Burns, dean of Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Day will speak on two separate occasions during her visit. On Feb. 26, her topic is “The Formation of Professional Identity: Preparing Students for Civic Responsibility and Service,” a topic applicable to all future professionals. The topic at her 5 p.m. lecture on Feb. 27 is “Situated Coaching in Nursing: Shifting Our Paradigm to Professional Formation.” Both events will be held in TCU’s Brown-Lupton University Union Ballroom.
