The event recognized the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation Education Complex Dedication; the Betsy and Steve Palko Hall Construction; and the Bailey Building Restoration. Dean Mary Martin Patton welcomed guests and provided impressive points of pride in recent years. Donors were thanked for making a difference as significant stakeholders in the project. Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Jr. shared his recollection of shock upon entering the building when he first assumed his post as chancellor, saying, “It was a gross understatement to say that the facility was not commensurate with the quality of the faculty, students and programs housed there.”
He continued by saying that improvements to the education building had long been on TCU’s wish list, noting that Ann and Jon Rex Jones stepped up and made the lead gift for the college.
“Their gift showed vision and foresight and provided the impetus for us to move ahead,” he said.
Others recognized during the luncheon included Helen and Guy Mabee Jr. from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation and Steve and Betsy Palko. Senior Mentor Lauren Leonhard gave the invocation. Clarence Scharbauer III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, told how the success of the College of Education fund raising project affected the Campaign for TCU. Dr. Steve Palko delivered remarks pertaining to his enthusiasm for education that prompted him to enter the doctorate program and eventually become part of the COE faculty.
Dean Patton concluded the event by introducing the new COE video called, Ready When You Are. She reiterated that at the TCU College of Education we are preparing educators and leaders who will sculpt the minds of our next generation of dreamers, leaders, and innovators.
“We are teaching to change the world,” she said. In acknowledging strides made in the past five years, this commemorative event set the tone for an exciting year ahead for the COE.
