The TCU community gathered for a “topping ceremony” for the new Brown-Lupton University Union on the lawn of Milton Daniel Hall on Monday, Nov. 12. The ceremony was officiated by Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. and Harold Hebson of Linbeck Construction. Attendees enjoyed free music and a baked potato bar with "toppings" as they watched Linbeck employees place an American flag on top of the spire in honor of Veterans Day. Students had the opportunity to register to win a free meal plan for a semester.

The spire, which tops the estimated $45.7 million facility, weighs 13,000 pounds. The top of its finial sits 146 feet off the ground, which is 785 feet above sea level. This prominent building element will become a landmark for the new Campus Commons. The facility is due for completion in August 2008 and will contain 145,700 square feet. In addition to dining facilities and meeting rooms, the University Union will house the post office, copy center, convenience store, gift shop and a 350-seat theater for performances, lectures and movies.
