TCU students and renowned nurse futurist interact online

Renowned nurse futurist Tim Porter-O’Grady, D.M., Ed.D., FAAN presented an online, interactive lecture in the course “Complexity and Innovation in Health Care,” to 35 doctoral students in TCU’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program on Oct. 2.

“Because our DNP program is online, we are able to invite national experts to teach our DNP students across multiple states,” said Linda Harrington, DNP program director. “The opportunity to exchange ideas and questions with such experts is an added value to the program.”

Dr. Porter-O’Grady is currently senior partner of Tim Porter-O’Grady Associates, an international healthcare consulting firm in Atlanta, and is an associate professor of healthcare at Arizona State University with over 165 journal articles and 17 books published to his credit.

In his Web cast from his cabin in North Carolina, Dr. Porter-O’Grady covered such topics as complexity, chaos theory, and quantum leadership as it pertains to the future practice of DNPs in health care.

Students and faculty, in their homes and offices across the nation, were able to ask questions. “The presentation via the Internet validated the strength of online education, providing students the opportunity to interact with a renowned nurse expert, the questions flooded in,” Harrington said.

Similar presentations in the DNP program will be made available to TCU students and faculty at least once a semester via Elluminate, a Web conferencing provider.
