Rev. Luis Bernard named director of Brite's Borderlands Center

Brite Divinity School has hired the Rev. Luis Bernard as director of its Borderlands Center for Latina/o Church Studies, effective Feb. 1.

He comes to Brite from Sarasota, FL, where he was the pastor of Beneva Christian Church. Texas-born, Rev. Bernard is a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX, and received a master's degree from the University of Central Texas in Killeen. He received his M.Div. degree from the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico in San Juan and is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Rev. Bernard has pastored congregations in Puerto Rico, Nashville, TN, and Homestead, FL.  He and his wife, Carmen, have three daughters. She has a Ph.D. degree in food service management and plans to teach in the Metroplex once the family has relocated to this area after the school year ends.

The work of the Borderlands Center is focused on how the growing Latina/o population challenges the traditional Christian approach to blending religion and culture.
