Janice Brightwell Cobb receives Outstanding Accounting Educator award

Janice Brightwell Cobb, CPA and accounting instructor at the TCU Neeley School of Business, was awarded the 2006 Outstanding Accounting Educator by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA). The award recognizes Texas accounting educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession. Cobb received a plaque and a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation Oct. 20 during the TSCPA’s Accounting Education Conference.

The statewide award honors Texas educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession. Criteria include instructional innovation, student motivation, and the pursuit of practical learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations and research accomplishments and publications.

During her career at TCU, Cobb has pioneered new teaching methods and developed additional classroom resources for various accounting courses. Though she has a reputation among students for teaching demanding classes requiring a heavy workload, her course sections typically are the first to fill and students rate her highly for instructional skills.

Cobb also spends more than 100 hours a year developing relationships with firms and businesses that hire TCU graduates, questioning them about the skills students need to be successful in the workplace and then incorporating that information into her courses. Her areas of expertise include financial accounting and reporting and accounting controls and systems. She received both her BBA and MBA from the Neeley School of Business at TCU.
