Renowned Chemist to Speak on Nanotechnology

Dr. Jillian M. Buriak will be on campus Nov. 13-14 and will describe the science and recent progress of nanotechnology as this year’s chemistry Green Chair lecturer.

Buriak’s first lecture will be Monday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Sid Richardson Lecture Hall 1. The lecture, titled “Nanotechnology, Megahype?,” will discuss the science of nanotechnology and the progress that can be expected in the short-term.

Buriak’s second lecture, “Nanoscale Functionalization of Semiconductor Surfaces Through Self-Assembly,” will take place Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. in Sid Richardson Lecture Hall 3. In this lecture, Buriak will provide selected examples of chemical reactions that can create new nanostructured semiconductors for electronic devices with improved properties. Both events are free and open to the public.

Dr. Jillian M. Buriak is a professor of chemistry at the University of Alberta in Canada and a senior research officer at the National Institute for Nanotechnology. She received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1990 and her doctorate from Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France in 1995. Buriak completed her postdoctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA in 1997.

Buriak was awarded the Rutherford Medal of the Royal Society of Canada in 2005, which recognizes outstanding research in the fields of physics and chemistry. In 2004, Buriak was named Canada Research Chair in Inorganic and Nanoscale Materials and included in “Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.” In 2003, she received the American Chemical Society’s Pure Chemistry Award given annually to an academic researcher in chemistry or chemical engineering under the age of 36 in North America.
