Response to comments on Chick-fil-A coming to campus

Fort Worth, TX July 26, 2013

TCU is represented by a wide spectrum of students, faculty and staff who come from all walks of life and who contribute their unique backgrounds to our community. It is important educate students to think broadly by allowing divergent viewpoints to co-exist, and this ultimately prepares them to be the difference makers of the world. By placing an emphasis on global citizenship, our students are better equipped to acknowledge challenges in the world and seek to bridge gaps.

TCU regularly requests and receives student input regarding the services we provide on campus. Of the input TCU has received over the years related to Dining Services, an overwhelmingly common request has been for the University to bring Chick-fil-A to campus. With the need to rethink 1873 Grill due to lack of traffic and to alleviate the overflow seen at Market Square, the University’s main dining facility, a solution that would offer such a balance and would also respond to student requests presented itself.

Just as with any of the vendors TCU engages, the University does not seek to align with political or personal statements made by Chick-fil-A. That said, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to decide for themselves what on-campus dining options they will utilize. But to ban an entity based on ideological reasons would be a limitation of freedom of expression, and would run the risk of conflicting with the diverse environment TCU seeks to create.
