Dr. Richard M. Ingersoll to speak at TCU Feb. 16

Education expert Dr. Richard M. Ingersoll will speak at the economics department’s Green Chair Public Lecture at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 16 in the Dee J. Kelly Alumni & Visitors Center on the TCU campus. His topic is “The Teacher Shortage: A Case of Wrong Diagnosis and Wrong Prescription.”

A teacher in both public and private schools for many years, Ingersoll has focused his research on the character of elementary and secondary schools as workplaces, teachers as employees and teaching as an occupation. He has published a number of articles and reports on the management and organization of schools, the debate over school accountability, the status of teaching as a profession and the impact of centralization and decentralization on school performance.

Ingersoll has received national recognition and numerous awards for his work, including the 2004 Outstanding Writing Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education for his book Who Controls Teachers’ Work? Power and Accountability in America’s Schools. He has also conducted many briefings for local, state and federal policy-makers and presented his research to congressional commissions and committees.

Ingersoll earned his doctorate degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and was a faculty member from 1995-2000 in the University of Georgia’s sociology department. He is currently a professor of education at the University of Pennsylvania.
