From Nov. 10-12, 2010, the College of Education was pleased to host Gloria Ladson-Billings as its Green Honors Chair for the year. Ladson-Billings is the Kellner Family Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students. She also investigates Critical Race Theory applications to education. In 2005, Ladson-Billings was elected to the National Academy of Education. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book The Dreamkeepers: Successful teachers of African American children as well as Crossing over to Canaan: The journey of new teachers in diverse classrooms and Beyond the Big House: African American educators on teacher education.As the Green Honors Chair, she spoke with College of Education students and faculty during her visit. In addition, she also gave two free lectures that were open to the public: “From the Achievement Gap to the Education Debt: Understanding Achievement in the U.S.” and “The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Students.”
