Texas CPA Society names Vigeland outstanding educator

Dr. Robert L. Vigeland, CPA and accounting professor at the Neeley School of Business at TCU, was honored on November 4 with the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (TSCPA) 2010 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. At the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, Vigeland received a plaque and a financial award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation.The annual award honors Texans who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession. Vigeland was noted for instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.
Vigeland, who is the 2010 Neeley Alumni Professor of the Year, has developed and taught several courses throughout his 21 years at TCU. He led the effort to develop the Master of Accounting program in response to the 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA examination. Vigeland stresses the educational value of professional internships to his students and has developed a for-credit internship course. He also developed a number of practical learning opportunities on a volunteer basis for students with not-for-profit entities in Fort Worth.
“Bob is respected in the accounting profession, he is an expert researcher, has written a number of publications, and is called upon to make presentations around the country. But perhaps most notably, he is liked and admired by his current and past students,” said O. Homer Erekson, John V. Roach Dean of the Neeley School of Business at TCU.
Vigeland is an active member of TSCPA and the Fort Worth chapter, serving on both the Society’s and Chapter’s board of trustees and is a member of TSCPA’s Accounting Education Foundation. TSCPA (http://www.tscpa.org) is a nonprofit, voluntary, professional organization representing Texas CPAs. The society has 20 local chapters statewide and has 28,000 members, one of the largest in-state memberships of any state CPA society in the United States.
