Conservationist Michael Fay to speak at TCU Jan. 31

Conservationist Michael Fay will speak at the TCU Geology Green Chair Public Lecture at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Student Center ballroom on the TCU campus.

Michael Fay wanted a better picture of the growing impact of humans on African wilderness, so he took to the air in a Cessna for a better look. In the last two years, he has flown nearly all of Africa, logging in twice the distance around the world. His mega flyover has provided new understanding of the growing human impacts in Africa.

Fay, whose travel and research have been featured in National Geographic magazine and on National Public Radio, will discuss his experience and findings.

Michael Fay earned his Bachelor of Science degree in botany from the University of Arizona, and both his Master of Arts degree and Ph.D. degree in anthropology from Washington University-Missouri Botanical Garden. He currently serves as Conservation Fellow for the National Geographic Society. He has been a consultant for such magazines as National Geographic and Time. Fay has traveled much of Africa participating in fieldwork such as an aerial survey of sea turtle populations, a survey of gorilla and other primate populations in Takamanda Reserve, and collecting plant materials for the National Cancer Institute.
