School of Music hosting its first Texas Double Bass Symposium

More than 100 bass players and their instruments are expected on campus for the weekend when the School of Music presents the inaugural 2009 Texas Double Bass Symposium Oct. 24-25. Host and coordinator is notable musician Yuan Xiong Lu, a native of Shanghai who is new to TCU faculty this year.Guest artists include virtuoso Francois Rabbath and young artist Nicholas Schwartz, First Prize winner of the 2009 ISB Solo Competition. There will be lectures, masterclasses and clinics conducted by double bass artists and teachers from UT/Austin, UNT, Rice, Texas Tech, Baylor, OU and the Houston Symphony.
International artists from music conservatories in China will also give masterclasses, along with TCU School of Music pianists Harold Martina and Janet Pummill.
The symposium will feature a student recital, an All-State Workshop for high school students, and an Orchestra Mock Audition with a $500 first prize.
