TCU’s Andrews Institute for Mathematics & Science Education has been recognized by the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) with a Golden Achievement Award for Partnership Excellence for the 2008-2009 school year.“The Andrews Institute has generously provided its resources to support strategic activities and programs for students and teachers in the FWISD,” said Nancy Ricker, executive director of FWISD’s Parent and Public Engagement program. “The benefits will be seen throughout the lives of those affected for many years.”
The Golden Achievement Award recognizes community partners for their outstanding contributions to the students and teachers of the FWISD. Now in its sixth year, the award was established to give recognition to the partners who made significant contributions to the education of students or the support of teachers. Other awardees include religious organizations, businesses, higher education and financial institutions, non-profits, law firms and government entities.
The Andrews Institute’s nomination came from the District level of the FWISD. Any partner with the FWISD can self-nominate or can be nominated by FWISD schools, departments or individuals. Winners will be recognized on the FWISD website.
“The TCU Andrews Institute is being recognized for its Math-Science Trail for elementary students,” said Jane Christie, director of FWISD’s Parent and Public Engagement program. “The event, co-underwritten by the (Andrews) Institute and Chesapeake Energy, Inc. was hosted on the TCU campus by the (Andrews) Institute.”
“TCU pre-teachers designed math and science activities at stations across the campus where students applied their knowledge of math and science concepts to solving problems. FWISD teachers observed and were given information to enable them to replicate some of the activities on their own campuses for a greater number of students,” Ms. Christie continued.
The Andrews Institute of Mathematics & Science Education was established as a collaborative venture between the College of Education and the College of Science & Engineering to address, among other things, the issues of training and qualifications for both pre-service and in-service teachers in mathematics and the sciences.
