At its fourth annual Frogs for the Cure game on October 16 at 7 p.m., TCU beat BYU and attempted to “tackle” breast cancer by raising visibility and funds for game beneficiary Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support its mission of a world without breast cancer.
Fans attending the game were encouraged to wear TCU Frogs for the Cure T-shirts to support the cause, as a portion of T-shirt sales and game tickets purchased at www.gofrogs.com will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tarrant County to help promote awareness in the Fort Worth and TCU communities. Game tickets and T-shirts are available for purchase online at www.gofrogs.com. T-shirts can also be purchased at the TCU bookstore and were also be available on the day of the game.
“We are very pleased that this year’s Frogs for the Cure game matches TCU against BYU in front of an anticipated crowd of 35,000,” said Ann Louden, chair of the Frogs for the Cure committee and the TCU Chancellor’s associate for external relations. “Such a large venue during October as breast cancer awareness month helps get the word out that early detection saves lives. A diagnosis of breast cancer used to be a death sentence. Now there is hope, not only for a cure, but also for the chance to prevent our children from having to deal with such a difficult disease."
The TCU/Komen partnership was recognized by a national Komen Community Service award presented to TCU in February. In the last three years, TCU has raised more than $40,000 for Komen’s efforts in research, education and social services.
Frogs for the Cure features both pre-game events for survivors and their families, as well as game recognition of survivors and TCU families. The halftime show will focus on breast cancer and its impact on the TCU community. Stories include Lynn Taylor, a recent TCU alumna and former twirler of the marching band, and Joan Katz, a former TCU parent and three-time breast cancer survivor in whose honor the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tarrant County Affiliate was created. The event will also boast a “Komen on the Go” truck located in front of the Brown-Lupton University Union from 9 am - 5 pm to provide interactive learning about breast cancer, living-saving recommendations, and self-exam instructions.
The game sponsor for this year’s Frogs for the Cure is the Baylor All Saints Joan Katz Breast Center. In May, the hospital announced plans to unveil the first comprehensive breast care center in Fort Worth. The Center, to be located under one roof in the Professional Pavilion on the Baylor Fort Worth campus, is available to all women and men diagnosed with breast cancer. The hospital is currently working to raise $13 million to cover construction and operational expenses. The Center will address medical as well as social and emotional needs through physicians, nurse navigators, social workers, counselors, wellness staff and more. Joan Katz, the Center's namesake, was diagnosed with cancer 26 years ago when she was 30. Additionally, she will be involved in creating the services needed at the facility to ensure patients receive care that will put their minds at rest during a difficult medical time.
