“Uncommon Sense” runs Aug. 30 – Oct. 12 at TCU’s Contemporary Arts space

"Uncommon Sense," the first exhibition of the fall season at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, brings together the work of Rebecca Baron, Tom Sachs, and Richard Wentworth. Each artist engages with the ways in which we organize and value material objects and artifacts within society. The show will be up Aug. 30 – Oct. 12 at TCU’s newest gallery, located at 2900 W. Berry St. An opening reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29.\The work in the exhibition is concerned with the creation and disruption of differing types of archive, where each artist approaches the notion of the archive in a significantly different way. Rebecca Baron’s film The Idea of North uses the recovered photographic images of S. A. Andrée’s failed 1897 expedition to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon. Baron explicitly implicates the viewer as a constructor of meaning in reading between images. Tom Sachs characterizes himself as a bricoleur in his re-making of a diversity of cultural objects in a meticulous but overtly hand fabricated fashion. Sachs’ work becomes a handmade interrogation of a relationship between culturally elevated and everyday objects. Richard Wentworth’s photographic series Making Do and Getting By, documents found instances of pragmatic inventiveness on the streets of cities around the world. These snapshots depict simple interventions in the urban environment as means of problem solving but in turn, speak to human inventiveness and differing value systems.
Rebecca Baron is a filmmaker from LA whose work has been shown in numerous international film festivals. Tom Sachs is an artist living and working in New York City. Richard Wentworth is an artist living and working in London, UK.
