General Assembly of Christian Church meeting in Fort Worth: TCU and Brite Divinity School involved
Fort Worth
7/19/2007
Up to 7,000 people from across the country are expected to attend the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) General Assembly July 21-25 in Fort Worth. Because of TCU and Brite Divinity School's shared history and special affiliation with the Christian Church, there will be a number of events planned with hosts and participants from campus.
Official conference events will be at Fort Worth Convention Center and downtown hotels will house most attendees, however, special accommodations for 400 members of church youth groups and young adults are available in TCU student resident halls. Shuttle buses will transport this contingent back and forth downtown.
On Tuesday, July 24, TCU and Brite will host a noon luncheon in the Crystal Room of the Hilton Fort Worth Hotel, with TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. as featured speaker. That afternoon, six buses with TCU faculty and staff as “tour guides” will take more than 300 people on tour of “The Changing Face of TCU & Brite” with a closing event at the Dee J. Kelly Alumni & Visitors Center. Dr. Don Mills, vice chancellor of student affairs at TCU, will address the group.
Other special events to be held on campus during the national gathering include:
- A special Young Adult Pre-Conference will be held at the Moudy Building on Friday and Saturday, July 20-21
- The Disciples Musicians Conference will bring over 150 musicians from throughout the country to campus for five days
- Youth events will be held throughout campus including in the halls and at the Rec Center.
- Rev. Kay Bessler Northcutt, associate professor of theology at Phillips Theological Seminary, will preach at a special service at Robert Carr Chapel at 10:30 a.m.Sunday.
A highlight of the week's events will be the installation of the moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for 2007-2009. Chosen for this honor is Dr. D. Newell Williams, president of Brite Divinity School at TCU since 2003. He also serves as professor of modern and American church history at Brite.
General Assembly is held biennially. In recent years, the group has met in Portland, OR, Charlotte, NC, and Kansas City, MO. Cities designated for future gatherings are Indianapolis and Nashville.
