Student-managed "Image" magazine wins 2007 College News Design award

Former Image magazine design editor Brian Wooddell and the magazine have won the 2007 College News Design award for best overall magazine. The College News Design award is the second national top award earned by the Image magazine staff this year. Earlier this spring, the Society of Professional Journalists awarded the magazine its national Mark of Excellence winner. Schieffer School of Journalism students staff the magazine.

“To be ranked among those programs, and particularly to be ranked at the top, in this case, says much about Brian’s work and that of the magazine staff,” Student Publications Director Robert Bohler said. “The College News Design awards in particular, recognize his vision in developing story packages and in developing the magazine through a unified concept.”

Wooddell, who graduated in May 2006 with a B.S. degree in journalism, won the first-place award, based on the design of the Spring 2006 issue, in the Special Section or Magazine/Overall category for quarterly publications in Division A—for those college journalism programs that publish daily newspapers.
A story package designed by Wooddell also won a third place award in the magazine/tabloid spread. Wooddell, now a page designer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, plans to enroll in the Brite Divinity School at TCU this fall.

The College News Design competition is judged by professional news media designers and is sponsored by the Student Society for News Design and the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Among the finalists in the best overall category were student magazines from Indiana University, Ball State University, and Kansas State University, all of whose programs have long been considered among the elite in college journalism.
