Cecilia Silva earns national education appointment

Dr. Cecilia Silva, associate professor of education at TCU, was recently appointed to serve as a member of the Commission on Reading for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Her three-year term will begin after the 2007 Annual Convention scheduled for November 15-20, in New York City.
“Dr. Cecilia Silva has been selected for a very important, national role in this organization,” said Sam Deitz, dean of the College of Education. “It acknowledges her excellent service to the profession and clarifies her performance as an outstanding faculty member in the field of education – especially in an area as important as reading. This appointment reflects well on Dr. Silva but also on the College of Education and all of TCU.”
Dr. Silva has been with TCU’s College of Education since 1995. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, M.S. from California State University and B.A. Ohio State University. Her teaching interests include Bilingual/Multicultural Education and English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher professional development.
The Commission on Reading is a deliberative and advisory body which each year identifies and reports to the NCTE Executive Committee on current key issues in the teaching of reading; reviews what the National Council of Teachers of English has done during the year to improve the teaching of reading at various levels of education; and recommends new projects and persons who might undertake them. The National Council of Teachers of English, with 60,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, is dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.
