Congressman Joe Barton will present “The Politics of Energy in the U.S. Congress” at TCU’s annual Engineering Lecture Series April 9 at 6 p.m in the Dee J. Kelly Alumni & Visitors Center.

Congressman Joe Barton was first elected to serve the Sixth District of Texas in 1984. He currently serves as the highest-ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the oldest standing legislative committee in the House of Representatives.  

The “House GOP's leading expert on energy policy” (Wall Street Journal, 10/02), Barton’s efforts to develop comprehensive national energy legislation led to the passage and enactment of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.  In previous sessions of Congress, he shared authorship of the two most comprehensive energy policy packages to pass the House since the 1930s.  

Barton has committed himself to passing legislation promoting an environment of high supply, low demand, consumer-friendly prices and environmental protection.  A proponent of competition, Barton is also responsible for both the first electricity deregulation legislation to pass a House subcommittee, and for legislation, which deregulated the natural gas industry.
