Annual Jim Wright Symposium featured renowned speakers Dr. Tom Sander and Rosa Rosales

The Center for Civic Literacy co-sponsored the annual Jim Wright Symposium Oct. 19 in the Brown-Lupton Student Center ballroom on TCU's campus. The symposium featured Harvard professor Dr. Tom Sander and League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national president Rosa Rosales.

The event began at 12:15 p.m. with a talk by Dr. Sander followed by a panel discussion co-sponsored by Leadership Fort Worth. Rosa Rosales presented her speech following the panel discussion.

Since 1995, Dr. Thomas H. Sander has been Executive Director of the Saguaro Seminar: Civic Engagement in America, a program of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He helped manage the research team for the book Bowling Alone, in addition to providing intensive feedback at every stage of the development of Bowling Alone (2000) and Better Together (2003). Sander is the editor of the Better Together report (2000), describing promising strategies for re-engaging Americans, and has written or collaborated on approximately a dozen articles or books relating to social capital. Sander received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and A.B. from Brown University.

Rosa Rosales is only the second woman to serve as national president of LULAC, the oldest and largest Hispanic organization in the US.  Rosales was among the first Mexican-American women to become a labor organizer in recent times. She received her B.A. in liberal arts from the University of Michigan. Active in the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), she was the first woman to hold the position of state director of that organization. Rosales recently served on the national LULAC board of directors as national vice president of the Southwest and is currently serving as national president of the organization.
