Distinguished geography professor to speak on TCU campus March 21

Author, professor and television personality Dr. Harm de Blij will speak at Texas Christian University Tuesday, March 21 at 11 a.m. in Dan Rogers Hall, room 134.

At the lecture, Dr. De Blij will be addressing issues of global warming, the rise of China and the growth of terrorism, among other topics. He will discuss the importance of geographers’ tools and findings in understanding the world today as it relates to these topics.

Dr. de Blij was a geography editor on ABC’s Good Morning America for seven years. He also served as a geography analyst on NBC News, and a writer and commentator for the original PBS television series The Power of Place. His textbook, titled Geography: Realms, Regions and Concepts, has sold more than one million copies, and is the most popular regional Geography textbook in the United States. It is used by the TCU Department of History and Geography.

He has published more than 300 scientific, educational and trade books and more than 100 articles. He specializes in geopolitical and environmental issues, and has held chairs at Georgetown and Marshall Universities. He is currently the Distinguished Professor of Geography at Michigan State University. Dr. de Blij has also served as editor at the National Geographic magazine, and was appointed an honorary life member of the society in 1994.
