University celebrates start of 139th academic year

TCU kicks off 139th academic year

Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Jr. officially kicked-off TCU’s 139th academic year at Convocation Thursday, Sept. 8 in Ed Landreth Auditorium. Faculty in full academic regalia, along with staff and students, heard the Chancellor share significant strides over the past year that have put TCU ahead of the curve. He discussed how TCU has been recognized among the “Best in the West” by the Princeton Review, and one of “42 Great Colleges to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education. He also discussed TCU’s ranking of 99 in U.S. News & World Report Best College Edition 2011 and in the top 20 of its Up & Coming National Universities list last year. Boschini also discussed Vision in Action and outlined the vision and goals set for the University. He also shared that the Campaign Scholarship Initiative has raised $84.5 million of its $100 million goal. Additionally the Chancellor welcomed TCU’s class of 2015, who represent one of the university’s most talented and diverse to date. Boschini also presented the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement as Creative Teacher and Scholar to Dr. Molly Weinburg, the William L. & Betty F. Adams Chair of Education and professor, College of Education, and the Wassenich Award for Mentoring in the TCU Community to Dr. Ken Morgan, professor of geology and director of the School for Geology, Energy & the Environment and the TCU Energy Institute.

Immediately following Convocation, participants walked to the lawn in front of Jarvis Hall to witness the unveiling of the Jarvis Hall historic marker. The marker is one of four that will be placed in front of the four original buildings on campus as part of the Century of Partnership celebration. The other buildings include the Bailey Building, Erma Lowe Hall, and Dave C. Reed Hall. After convocation, TCU held a reception honoring TCU’s founders, Addison and Randolph Clark. The reception was held on the lawn between Mary Couts Burnett Library and Winton-Scott Hall and featured the TCU Jazz Ensemble and refreshments.
