Kimberly Dena, a political science/strategic communications major and John V. Roach Honors College laureate will be the featured speaker at Honors Convocation this week. As winner of the third annual Honors College oratorical competition, Kimberly’s speech is titled “The U in Revolution.” The event will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14 in Ed Landreth Auditorium.

State Sen. Wendy Davis, a former TCU Honors student, is scheduled to attend and receive a citation as Honors Alumna of the Year. The program will also include announcement of the Honors Professor of the Year and musical performances by the TCU Jazz Ensemble and Honors students Erik Danielson and Duy Nguyen.

Ron Pitcock, the J. Vaughn and Evelyne H. Wilson Honors Fellow and Assistant Director of the Honors College, developed the idea of selecting a student speaker prior to the 2009 Convocation. Dean Peggy Watson and other Honors colleagues concurred, selecting a speech contest as the means to assess potential candidates within Honors. Ron provides a general topic for a 15-minute speech and asks contestants to approach the subject from whatever direction they chose.

Honors Week begins with the presentation of Senior Honors Projects today and tomorrow. Each of the Schools and Colleges has scheduled their own presentations throughout the week. For a complete schedule, go to www.getonline.tcu.edu/2011honors/index.html.

The 49th annual Honors Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Lupton University Union ballroom. Bill Moncrief (Neeley School), 2010 Honors Professor of the Year, and 2010 Departmental Senior Scholars will be recognized.
