Carolyn Spence Cagle, PhD, RNC, has received the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Publishing Division’s Excellence in Writing Award for Qualitative Nursing Research. Cagle is an associate professor in Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences at TCU. The award recognizes her article, “Blending Voices of Mexican American Cancer Caregivers and Healthcare Providers to Improve Care,” published in the ONS journal, Oncology Nursing Forum, as an outstanding scholarly presentation in the area of qualitative nursing research. Elizabeth Wolff, RN, BSN, is co-author of the article.

“My work with Mexican American cancer caregivers has sensitized my mind and spirit to the strength of women who advocate for the well-being of family members during a cancer experience situated in a complex healthcare system,” said Cagle. “I am grateful to those at ONS who acknowledge my work and that of my colleagues through this award. Receipt of this award provides sustenance to support a research plan that will improve the health of diverse caregiving women through evidence-based healthcare policy changes involving healthcare providers, diverse women, and other health system stakeholders.”

Cagle received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Minnesota at Mankato, her master of science in maternal child health nursing degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, her PhD from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX, and her post-doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is an active member of ONS, the ONS Spiritual Care Special Interest Group, Texas Nurses Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
