Communicator Awards names eight KTCU students winners

Fort Worth, TX

7/20/2009

The 15th annual Communicator Awards named eight KTCU students to receive Distinction Awards. The Communicator Awards is the leading international awards program honoring creative excellence for communications professionals. The Communicator Awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), a 450+ member organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.

TCU students Ricky Anderson, Calvin Cameron, Jarrod Greene, Mallory Kirkham, Ross Murray and former student Jack Woolnough, along with Station Manager Russell Scott, were all honored with the Distinction Award.

In a public service announcement titled “Designated Dave,” Ricky Anderson, Calvin Cameron, Jarrod Greene and Eric Munro produced a 60-second story about a friend and designated driver.  Through the use of humor and a variety of sound effects, listeners accompany “Dave” as he drives an intoxicated friend home from a party. The message is clear, if you’re going to drink, have a designated driver.

In a public service announcement titled “Cats and Global Warning,” Mallory Kirkham and Jarrod Greene told the story of kittens overflowing into the ocean and being devoured by giant squid all because of global warming. The humorous message comes around to asking listeners to do their part to reduce their carbon footprint through recycling and carpooling.

Ross Murray and Jack Woolnough (’08 TCU graduate) collaborated on a radio station promotional announcement for “New CD Friday.”  In the announcement, Jack questions why Ross is wearing no clothes, at which point Ross realizes its “new” and not “nude music Friday.”

KTCU Station Manager Russell Scott won for his university public service announcement which incorporated audio clips of four TCU students discussing their study of lake water contamination in North Texas.
