TCU hosts American Widow Project event March 3 and 4

TCU’s Department of Social Work is hosting Taryn Davis, president of American Widow Project (AWP), on March 3 and 4 from 4 to 9 .m. in the Bass Building, room 104, located on the corner of Lubbock Avenue and W. Bowie Street. The event is open and free to attend.

Led by AWP’s Ms. Davis, who became a widow at 21, the two sessions include: presentations, creating “daddy memory bears” for the children of the widows, DVD presentations of the widows’ stories, and refreshments.

There will also be a workshop on starting a non-profit, led by Ms. Davis, on March 3 from 1-3:15 in Bass 325.

AWP is a non-profit organization dedicated to the new generation of those who have lost the heroes of yesterday, today and tomorrow, with an emphasis on healing through sharing stories, tears and laughter and connecting military widows to each other.

“I saw Taryn Davis on TV and became inspired to learn more,” said Christina Sessums, social work student and event coordinator. “This project focuses on an important issue facing our community and the nation at large. I saw how she was helping others in her situation and I was inspired to meet her and get involved.”

In addition to the Department of Social Work at TCU, the event is also supported by TCU’s Center for Community Involvement and Service-Learning, TCU Junior Transitions Team, TCU’s Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, TCU’s Panhellenic Sororities and Fraternities, TCU College of Education and several other departments who are committed to producing global leaders.
