AddRan College of Liberal Arts professors win corporate spelling bee
Fort Worth, TX
9/25/2008
A group of professors from AddRan College represented the university and won a corporate spelling bee sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fort Worth to support the Tarrant Literacy Coalition– a non-profit agency that will build partnerships between literacy providers and businesses that need on-site training. The Rotary Club is partnering with the United Way of Tarrant County and leaders from business, government, education, healthcare and the faith community to help establish the Coalition.
"I'm thrilled with how the Fort Worth business community supported our first Corporate Spelling Bee with their time, treasure and employees' talents at spelling. If the success of an event can be measured in laughter, the Bee was a grand-slam. But we also raised seed money to establish the Tarrant Literacy Coalition, whichwill help the more than 238,000 low-literate adults in our county get the training they need to improve their lives and the lives of their families," said Jill “J.R.” Labbe, chairperson of the event.
The team, called Frogspell, defeated teams from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Alcon Labs, BNSF, Chesapeake and more. Team members include David Vanderwerken, David Colon and Ann George from the English department and Bonnie Frederick from the Spanish department.
The team will receive the travelling trophy to display once it is engraved. For more information, contact the Rotary Club of Fort Worth (817) 332-7977.
