Child Development major added
Fort Worth, TX
6/2/2008
TCU has added a major in child development. The course work, which has previously allowed students to obtain a minor, will offer students the opportunity to obtain a B.S. or B.A. degree beginning in Fall of 2008.
The child development major is a multidisciplinary program which includes nine disciplines: child development, communication sciences & disorders, sociology, criminal justice & anthropology, education, nutritional sciences, nursing, psychology, and social work. Its interdisciplinary focus is designed to give students in the major comprehensive insight into the issues of child development.
The child development program is designed for students who wish to go into jobs or areas of study in child development such as children’s mental health, preschools or Head Start. The major will also work well for students who wish to wish to double major in areas such as psychology, social work, criminal justice, and communication sciences. A double major will work well for students planning to be clinicians, counselors, social workers, pediatricians, occupational therapists, lawyers, educators, or speech and language pathologists. This major will give students who want to work with children in these various disciplines an edge in their chosen field of study.
The child development program benefits from its partnership with the TCU Institute of Child Development. Students involved with the Institute have unique opportunities for internships and independent studies. Students also have the unique opportunity to learn from Dr. Karyn Purvis, a renowned expert and speaker in the fields of child development and child advocacy.
