Geology team places third in annual competition

Fort Worth, TX

4/22/2008

Adviser John Breyer and the TCU Horned Frog Geology Team placed third out of 40 schools in the Imperial Barrel Award competition at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists annual meeting in San Antonio over the weekend. The team, consisting of graduate students Erin Payne, Brian Atwell, William Hasler, Amy Patterson, and Rachael Creel, placed behind the University of Oklahoma and Imperial College London, which placed first and second in the competition, respectively.

The Imperial Barrel Award Program allows students to work in teams, analyze real geologic data and present to a panel of petroleum industry judges. Teams of five students compete for trophies and cash prizes. Geoscience graduate students participating in the competition are required to evaluate and develop hydrocarbon deposits in either the North Sea or Australia offshore. The TCU team had a potential prospect in the North Sea.
