Schieffer School partners with Washington think tank

Fort Worth, TX

2/28/2008

TCU's Schieffer School of Journalism and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)  held the first of a series of monthly dialogues titled "Dialogues in Public Policy and the Media" yesterday. Bob Schieffer, award-winning broadcast journalist, CBS Face the Nation moderator and 1959 TCU graduate is the host of the series. The first dialogue discussed the status of U.S. efforts in Afghanistan.

The series, which will be held in Washington at CSIS headquarters, will feature top public policy experts, government officials, leading think-tank scholars, and prominent journalists discussing issues related to national security, foreign policy and global challenges.

Featured speakers at yesterday's event included R. Nicholas Burns, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and former Ambassador to NATO; Lt. Gen. David Barno, U.S. Army (retired), director, Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, National Defense University, and former Commander of Combined Forces in Afghanistan; Steve Coll, the CEO of the New America Foundation, staff writer for the New Yorker, and winner of two Pulitzer prizes; and Rick Barton, co-director of the Post Conflict Reconstruction Project and senior advisor in the International Security Program at CSIS, and previously a supporting expert to the Iraq Study Group.

"This is a great opportunity for the Schieffer School, since CSIS is one of the most respected institutions of its kind in the world," said Bob Schieffer.  "Their resident fellows and associates are called upon by every major news organization every day to provide insight into the complex issues facing the world."

"We are delighted to partner in this project with Bob Schieffer and the Schieffer School at TCU," said Dr. John Hamre, CSIS President and CEO. "Bob is the most universally respected journalist in the business. His fairness combined with his depth on the issues establishes a standard for all his colleagues to emulate."

CSIS is a bipartisan, independent, nonprofit organization that provides strategic insights and policy solutions to decision makers in government, international institutions, the private sector and civil society. It has earned the reputation of being one the world's preeminent public policy institutions.

The Schieffer School is emerging as one of the world's top journalism schools dedicated to preparing professionals in both journalism and strategic communications for the new media world while maintaining the traditional standards of basic, straightforward reporting and ethics.
